D2: Automation in Programming

Project Leaders: Lorah, MacNeil, Raley, Jakobs, Constituent Board

Child and teacher are playing with paint markers with a communication tablet in front of them. The text "Automation in Programming " is displayed below.

Problems Addressed: AAC users often lack access to robust personalized vocabulary when pre-literate or new to AAC. The vocabulary and screen layouts in those systems are also created without input from AAC users. Easy personalization could make a huge difference!

Goals of the project:

  1. Develop and evaluate prototypes that will automate VSD programing for individuals who are learning language and their communication partners.
  2. Evaluate the prototype and a photo-grid based automated programming technology made available for testing by industry partners.
  3. Disseminate evidence-based, user centered technical and clinical guidelines.

Slide showing how we intend to reach our goals, with a image showing what the initial VSD prototype looks like.

How will we accomplish these goals?

  1. Starting with an initial VSD prototype created with previous funding, we are evaluating the effectiveness of the prototype, and iterating development on the prototype.
  2. Use the information learned from the VSD prototype to expand to photo-grid based programming.
